Hockey For Dummies: The First Edition

Before we even started our blog we had this idea for a series of posts that would attempt to inform certain fans of some hockey basics they seem to struggle with. Most often this will be inspired by comments and questions overheard at games. Now we're sure most of our readers (if we have readers) know these things but there are some fans who can't quite grasp what is happening on the ice. Whether they be girls who were forced by their boyfriends to go to the game, corporate guests, or that annoying guy who always yells shoot from the time the power play begins, we hope to make things a little bit easier for them.

We're going to start with the basics because apparently there are some Sioux fans out there who struggle with the roster. If you don't, you can quit reading now. (Consider that your warning. If you continue to read and get irritated, it's your own fault. ) Now the roster is a listing of a team's players. A basic roster will tell you the player's name, number, and position. The position listed is the player's primary position. Sometimes players are asked to play a different position. For example, Kyle Radke is listed as a defensemen but is currently playing at the forward position. We have included a basic roster for your viewing pleasure. We also threw in a pronunciation guide in case you feel the need to scream at the players, now you can do so without fear of a mispronunciation. (We didn't make this pronunciation guide so don't ask about Chay's last name. We're not sure how it's supposed to be said. Also, Ryan Martens is #8, not #14. We don't know what they were thinking when they put this thing together.) This pronunciation guide was found in a weekly Fighting Sioux hockey press release. For the official roster, complete with pictures, you can visit the Fighting Sioux website.
